VINTAGE ENGLISH KITCHEN SCALES BLACK BOOTS CASH CHEMISTS 7 BRASS BELL WEIGHTS 2
THERE IS NO WEIGHTS TRAY WITH THIS MODEL. WEIGHTS ARE PLACED DIRECTLY ONTO THE WEIGHTS STAND.
They balance well. Should they ever get out of balance, rather unlikely, there is a small box of ball bearings on the underside of the small pan which is accessed by a screw on the top.
As is quite usual the BOOTS CASH CHEMIST label is damaged, but not as bad as some I have seen. It is a source of wonder to me that they made scales out of virtually indestructible cast iron then applied a label that would wash off.
They have been used but there are only a very few inoffensive rough areas and slight wear marks to the paintwork. There is some reflection in the photos
They are a nice size, 12” wide and 8” high, not taking up too much room on your worktop.
The BOOTS BRASS BELL brass bell weights are ….
1lb, 8oz, 4oz, 2oz, 1oz, 1/2oz and 1/4oz
John Boot, an agricultural worker, moved to Nottingham, England, and opened a small herbalist store in 1849, from which he prepared and sold herbal remedies. His business soon proved popular, especially with the working poor of Nottingham’s new industries, who could not afford the services of a doctor. After John’s death in 1860, his son, Jesse took sole control and his talent for business was soon evident. He expanded the range of products to include proprietary medicines and household necessities. He adopted a strategy of buying stock in bulk and selling his goods much cheaper than his competitors, advertising under the slogan “Health for a Shilling”. In 1884, Jesse’s first shops opened outside the city, in Lincoln and Sheffield. Jesse’s policy of superior goods at competitive prices delivered with expert care, meant that the Boots name quickly became synonymous with quality, value and service.
History does not record when the company started to manufacture kitchen scales. These were definitely made in the earlier years of production evidenced by the label. These models are very hard to find these days.
POSTAGE, PACKAGING AND LOVING CARE
All items I sell are packaged very carefully in accordance with Royal Mail guidelines.
I will mail these scales from the UK. I have reviewed the delivery performance of the UK courier so far and it is between 2 and 7 days, an average of 4 days. For other destinations such as China delivery will be around 15 working days.
You may be concerned that they have to be sent such a long way but I can assure you there is no need. I use large sturdy boxes and pack all the spaces so they remain rigid. The scales are wrapped in large bubble wrap and bound with tape so they do not move about. The weights are packed separately also in large bubble wrap.
I have sold many sets to the USA, Canada and Worldwide and ALL have arrived safely.
I will ship to mainland Europe and elsewhere in the World apart from Russia.
At the moment I am only accepting payment by PayPal.
I will gladly provide further information or photographs. I pack and post items on receipt of payment as I appreciate buyers want their items “Toot Sweet”.
